The Power of Recognition: Why We Overlook the People Who Matter Most

Last week at The People Table, our conversation centered on a deceptively simple topic: The Power of Compliments and Recognition.
As a professional network organizer, I spend a lot of time thinking about how we connect. But this specific discussion sparked some deep self-reflection on how I personally handle appreciation in both my professional and home life.
The “Common Courtesy” Trap
I’ve always considered myself a “door holder”—a “please and thank you” kind of guy. I’m usually on point with common courtesies for strangers or casual acquaintances. But during our session, I realized something sobering: I’m not always as intentional with the people I interact with daily.
It’s a common irony in business and leadership. The people who help us pay the bills, the vendors who help us grow our businesses, and the family members who are the ultimate reason we get out of bed in the morning often get pushed to the side.
They aren’t forgotten. They aren’t unappreciated. But they also aren’t being recognized.
Why Recognition in Business Matters
In the world of professional networking, we often focus on the “next” lead or the “new” connection. However, consistent recognition of your existing circle is what builds true loyalty. Whether it’s a long-term vendor or a dedicated team member, verbalizing your gratitude:
  • Strengthens professional bonds
  • Increases retention and loyalty
  • Creates a culture of appreciation
Setting a New Intention
I’ve set a fresh intention to make sure I show my inner circle exactly how grateful I am for what they do. It’s about ensuring the people who make my life better actually hear it from me, not just “know” it.
